Ladies and gentlemen yesterday we had visitors from Anglo American company headquarters in Canada at Chironde Secondary School in Shurugwi. They were inspecting projects done by Unkimine in our district as implemented by World Vision. Unki mine injected USD 2.8millionfor educational development. This came out through community engagement forums. The program is code named (STEP UP) Sustainable Transformations Educational Program Unki-platinum. The program has three phases, and the first phase will see twenty-one schools benefitting and Chironde Primary and Secondary are among the beneficiaries. Materials bought for Chironde Secondary school costed 27500usd, so far 5kv solar system was installed and it is serving the whole institution well. 500bags of cement, termite poison bricks 230, 100chairs and 100 tables, books among others and this applies to all schools who are also set to benefit from the construction of classroom blocks. Some schools will have solar mechanisation and water pumps under the same program. Unki Mine says it is not a donor but rather a development partner, so it expects hands-on from communities. Therefore all locally available resources are expected from the communities this include among other things bricks, river sand pit sand and gravel.Chironde primary and secondary are the nearest schools to Unkimine and the community has high expectations from the giant mine to improve and construct better infrastructure.
