This paper aims to comprehensively explore the key issues shaping Zimbabwe's lithium sector and their broader implications for the country's economic development agenda. Through a careful evaluation of policy frameworks, geopolitics, environmental concerns, and human rights considerations, the objective is to shed light on the opportunities and challenges arising from Zimbabwe's involvement in the Global Lithium Value Chain amid evolving geopolitics. Furthermore, the paper advocates for a reassessment of the government's policy responses to the lithium value chain, emphasizing strategies that prioritize sustainability, equity, and long‑term economic resilience in the face of geopolitical uncertainties. As the first installment in a series of discussion papers produced by the Africa Institute of Environmental Law (AIEL), the primary goal is to draw attention to critical issues surrounding Zimbabwe's lithium industry and provide actionable policy recommendations to inform decision‑making processes.
